I have a paypal account and a bank account. Is paypal similar to a secondary bank account? Can I use paypal by itself to make payments, or do I need to link it with my bank account to submit payment? I am asking this question, because every time I log in to paypal, it says that I have zero dollars on my account. I wonder what that means. I have money on my bank account. Why doesn’t it show up in paypal? So, is paypal like a separate bank account or what?

When I was growing up, people would pull out five-year-old “mature” chutney and jam from cupboards, and we would eat it with no ill effects (that I remember).Sauces such as ketchup etc didn’t seem to be kept in the fridge once opened; neither were vinegars, gherkins beetroots etc. although mayonaise and other eggy type sauces were.I can even remember my mum skimming some mould off the top of jam and letting us have what was underneath.(because the sugar had preserved it apparantly… who knows, my mum went through the 2nd World war and rationing)
So,What has changed, if anything? If I make Chutney, jam, flavoured vinegars, raspberrys in vodka etc, do I really need to eat them within a month and keep them in the fridge at all times? What about things like pickle, ketchup, soy sauce, miso, fish sauce, that type of thing? I know it always *says* keep in the fridge, but is it quite necessary? Is it just scary UK legislation and if we were abroad, say France/Spain/Italy would it be different

see people whom you know for certain claim (and receive) several benefits and then spend some of it on having their hair coloured, their nails manicured and painted and buy their kids all the latest fashions, toys and computer games. Does it gall you that as you go to pay your gas, electric and water bills and pay your own council tax, these people receive rent free accommodation and no council tax bill, their children receive free transport to school and free dinners?

I’m all for helping those incapable of helping themselves – ‘Help’ meaning proving necessities not luxuries but the U.K. seems to have gone mad on this. Whilst we are told that we might lose our free bus passes; and our savings are means tested should we ever dare to enquire about a little help, others get it all on a plate.

The only reason we DO have some savings (not all do however) is because we worked hard and wasted none of our money on the luxuries which non-workers now seem to be able to afford.

I sometimes look at my bank book and think “Why didn’t I take a holiday every year? Why did I cycle to work and not buy a car and why did I wait so long to upgrade my T.V. from B&W to a colour one, (I don’t have a T.V. at all now) why didn’t I have a computer and broadband long ago and why do I still not have any new furniture?

I’ve been frugal in hopes of leaving something to my children but sadly I can envisage it now going to pay for care costs in a few years time. Something is not right here. How do you feel about this – is this just the British system gone mad or is it the same where you live?
