My central air conditioning unit in the basement is leaking water, is there a way I can fix it without calling for service?

  • Felipa says:

It is a 2009 Renault Megane Coupe. The air conditioning comes on automatically upon starting and remains on until the car has heated up. This appears to increase the fuel consumption, so I always turn it off.

I would rather if it didn’t come on in the first place.

  • Nettie says:

I’ve been having some problems with my car. It’s a 2001 Ford Taurus and it’s in pretty good condition except lately its hoses have been leaking. The coolant hose leaks really bad, also my air conditioning has a hose that leaks freon (sp?) faster than I can put it in. Since it’s nearly summer here in Louisiana, I want to fix my AC! So who do I take it to to have the hoses replaced?
I never said the coolant and the A.C were related. Don’t be an idiot.

  • Felipe says:

We are trying to fix the air conditioning at work (the landlord won’t do anything) and need to replace some parts. We have the ducts and I have found out that the ducts are connected to the collars (male/female). The collars are then attached to a big square piece which then has the grille attached where the air goes out. Does anyone know what the big metal square piece is called? I’ve been looking online but so far, no luck.

And if you know of any good diagrams illustrating this, that’d be great as well.

  • Donnell says:

We might be moving into a huge 2,000 sq ft warehouse loft next month, but it does not have air conditioning. We have a dog and 2 cats. We live in Philadelphia so it gets hot in the summer. There is a huge fan up on the high ceiling and we will probably put an air conditioner in the window in the bedroom area, since there are walls around the bedroom. For the most part, it wont be air conditioned. I am worried that the dog will pass out or get over-heated. Should I be worried?

  • Bess says:

I have a central air conditioning unit that is probably 12 years old or so.I recently had a situation where my central air would run constantly without shutting off.The air temperature in my house was 80 degrees and it was still running.Well,I also recently found out that the coils in the ac unit were completely frozen solid along with the hoses that ran from outside at the unit, all the way inside to my furnace.Id like to know what causes these coils and pipes to freeze and how does one keep it from happening again?

  • Jacquline says:

  • Nan says:

I’ve often wondered how the Air conditioning works in a building 50 floors and up. I would imagine there would be an extremely large Central air unit in the bottom of the building that would cool the bottom part of the building but what about the rest of it? Do 100 floor buildings have a different setup than a 50 floor building?

  • Su says:

We have central air conditioning in our house (2000 sq/ft between 1st and 2nd stories, 1000 sq ft basement, located in Colorado). The air feels reasonably good in all rooms except that the Master Bedroom, situated on the SW side of the house, stays considerably warmer, and really cooks around 2-4 a.m.

We have a vaulted ceiling which is at its highest point just outside the Master Bedroom door (the bedroom’s ceiling isn’t vaulted, and is 9ft. high), but it’s not all that hot at that point; but as soon as you walk in the bedroom door, you notice the temp change. The majority of the house’s vents are slightly to fully open, to allow good overall airflow, but I can’t figure why that bedroom stays so warm.

  • Milan says:

  • Jefferson says:

I have a ’96 chevy S10. The air condition is not cool at all. It blows but the air is just warm air. We found a leak in the compressor so we completely replaced the compressor and it doesnt leak at all. We also put almost 3 cans of frion into the system and it has stayed. The pressure has been the same, so nothing is leaking. The pulley on the end of the compressor would kick on and off and we have it to the point where it stays on when the AC is on. However, the accumulator doesnt get cold at all. So I’m assuming there is a circulation problem. Dad thinks that we have too much frion in the system but i think something else is wrong. One thing for sure, something is definitely wrong with my AC system. What do I need to do in order to get it working right again? Thanks

  • Karlyn says:

My local McDonalds have their air conditioning on all the while.

Even when it is cold it is freezing in there, they hardly ever use the heating.
I sit in there drinking my tea and have to wear a coat (I do eat the food but it is very very rare)

I was once told when that it costs virtually the same to power an air conditioning unit in these places as opposed to switching on the heating?

Is there any truth in this? Thanks

Got a bit of a cold/flu bout three weeks ago. Kicked it really fast (6 days) with Juice Plus and Cold FX. But, it left me with a bit of a hack. And now, this hack is just sticking around. Not really productive, no major lung oysters or anything.

Air conditioning really seems to agitate the heck out of it. ITs so damn hot here lately, that everyone has their A/C Blasting at high, all the time.

Why does A/C agitate it, and is there anything I can take or do to alleviate it a bit. Flares up at night and keeps me from sleeping.
    thanks muchly all…
Well, I dont have my own A/C at all, not in my car or house. But, with the amount of running around I do on a daily basis, I come across it lots. So, lots of temperature fluctuations in my body.

Never thought about how some A/C’s are not cleaned and can be laden with mold or spores or something. Thats good to know.

As far as the Juice Plus and Cold FX comment goes, well buddy, take them both when needed. You can count on one hand the number of times I’ve been sick in the past 5 years. And I work shift work too, so I have a higher chance of getting sick as well.

  • Whitney says:

Hello. I have a White Rogers thermostat and a Lennox air conditioning unit. We live in Florida so it is hot as HECK outside. It’s upper 90’s during the day, and upper 70’s low 80’s at night. My thermostat is on “cool” and the set temperature in the house is 79 degrees F. The problem, especially all day today, is that it’s staying on 81 degrees, and it’s hot in my house. The windows are all shut, the doors we keep closed as much as possible, and the air vents are blowing out cool air, but we don’t know why the temperature will not go below 81. The temp doesn’t go higher, but it won’t go lower either. The weird part is, at night, it goes down to the set temperature of 79. So, can anyone tell me what’s going on? Please help!!!

  • Zachary says:

To me it makes sense that the use of air conditioning to keep cool in an automobile would waste water and Freon. How does gasoline interact with auto air conditioning?

  • Norbert says:

My roommate and I are having this debate about which is more cost effective. She prefers to leave our system set to “off” and leave the air conditioning fan on constantly. She claims this is the best way for us to save on our bill.

I usually set the thermostat and then put our AC unit on “Auto”. I figure that way it will adjust to the correct temp. only whenever it needs to, and this is actually saving us money.

    Who is right?
Please help! Our electric bill is at stake!

  • Garland says:

We had a new coil put in our central air last year. Before that, the smell from the AC became horrible, and apparently we had bacteria accumulating on the coil inside. It was so bad, even cleaning the coil didn’t work. So they replaced it. The air was fresh and clean. That was just last summer.
Well, today we are having a very warm day in the mid 70’s. We turned the air on, and it smells horrible AGAIN. This happened too on warm days in the fall. I told the technician, and he is trying to tell me my ducts need cleaned. BUT, the heat doesn’t smell at all, and we had the ducts cleaned a few years ago. They weren’t that bad, apparently, but they did find mold.
I have asthma, and can’t cough and sputter every time the AC is on this summer. Now we have to pay again for him to get the coil out and inspect it, I’m assuming. I don’t think this is fair – we just paid over a thousand dollars for the coil, which he said should last 8 plus years.
What could this be? Bacteria again? Will a UV light solve the problem, and, will we need yet another new coil?
What should he be checking when he comes? He seems to act like he has no clue. What am I suppose to do? Again, with asthma this is a really bad problem.
    Thank you!

An Air Conditioner is moving the heat energy from a room to outside the room. So theoretically no energy is required. To heat a room, for example to spent 1000 joule of heat inside a room, we need 1000 or more joules. But to take 1000 joules from a room and move it to outside why we need energy? Actually we are getting energy from the room. At present it is not possible, but in future is there any possibility that our engineers will develop an Air Conditioner that will not consume any energy but will give out energy?

Or is there any law that says that to move 1000 Joule from a room we need at least X joules?

I have an air condition in the attic. There are two drains for condensation (a primary and a secondary). There is very little drainage coming out of the primary and a steady drip coming out of the secondary (sometimes to much). I was told the primary is probably clogged. What I don’t understand is sometimes it does come out of the primary and not the secondary.
