I am going to be going to Europe with a friend and doing the backpacking thing – but I have no idea what I’m doing. I don’t want to travel with travellers cheques because apparently a lot of places don’t accept them anymore. I have looked into other options (such as a prepaid mastercard and other prepaid travel cards) but I’m not really sure about it all.

I was just wondering if anyone out there had done this before and what you may have found effective?

  • Luann says:

I am going to Europe and recently got a Visa TravelMoney card. I understand there are fees when I use it internationally, but I was wondering if it would be cheaper to get cash out of an ATM with that card in Europe or just use the card each time. If you have experience with this card, it would be great! I do not have a credit card or debit card so that is why I went with the prepaid card.

Hi, I’m Asian and my family and I will travel for vacation to eastern Europe next month. My parents are thinking the charges for our cellphone service roaming feature would be too expensive.

They’re thinking of buying a pre-paid sim card in Switzerland or Germany to use for our cellphones. We plan to use them when we’re touring eastern Europe. Are there actually pre-paid sim cards that can be bought in Germany or Switzerland?

and if so, can we use them around eastern europe? (will we have cellphone service while in countries other than Switzerland or Germany)

    thank you much!

ALL the gift cards I can find (Visa, MC, Amex) are restricted to US purcahases only in the fine print. I want a gift card so that I will not have to register it before I send it for European purchases.
Thanks, C! The user will need to purchase in Europe on-line, so travelers’ checks will not be viable (is that correct)? Also, technically I should have used the term “prepaid debit card” since prepaid cards are such. Thanks for the input. We’ll call the card companies if we can figure out how. :-)
Thanks to all for the responses! It sounds like I cannot simply buy a gift card and send it to Europe as I had hoped to do! :-(((
Thanks to all for the helpful answers. Unfortunately, most suggestions require my name on the docs. …I had hoped I could use a gift card to just send out. Perhaps the travelers’ checks suggestion might work? If not I’ll pose this question again later as this is about to expire. Thanks again!
…and special thanks to L&H2ALL for the extended comments.
